#59 Kouitsas Bridge

 

It's located at the entrance of the Vrysochori village, in Zagori. It's situated in "Kouitsa", a name that was given to the area by an old family from Vrysochori that used to live there. It bridges the namesake stream of the River Aoos.

The settlement was first mentioned in a golden bull of Andronikos II in 1295 and the Old Vlach name was Liasinitsa. Prevailed, however, the Hellenized name Lesinitsa, while Vrysochori was named in 1927.

  National Park of Vikos-Aoos

The National Park of Vikos - Aoos is an area of ??protected natural beauty, that is renowned for the dramatic changes in the natural landscape, as well as the lush vegetation that are followed by verdant cliffs.

It was officially declared as a national park in 1973.

The area is part of the European network of protected areas Natura 2000. It includes the Vikos Gorge, which is the core of the park, as well as part of the range of Tymfi, the ravine of Aoos and a series of preserved traditional settlements. The Park is shared to municipalities of Konitsa, Zagori and Tymfi and to the community of Papigo. The total area reaches 13,000 hectares. It borders in the northeast with the National Park of Pindos - Valia Calda.

Parametrically of the park are built some traditional villages of Zagoria: Monodendri, Vikos, Megalo and Mikro Papigko (Large and Small Papigko). Around the Park there are six other villages of Zagoria, Aristi, Agios Minas, Vitsa, Kapesobo, Vradeto and Vrisohori, and outside of Zagoria, Konitsa, Kallithea and Klidonia.

The Park includes an extremely rare ecosystem and landscapes of rare beauty and a great diversity of flora and wildlife.

At lower altitudes, it includes Mediterranean type ecosystems, while in the intermediate are growing oak ecosystems and forests of black pine and fir. The perennial clumps of Robolis are also of interest.

The area is a home of a large number of plants and herbs. There have been recorded over 1,700 species and subspecies of plant species, for instance there are 18 species of geranium, 43 of clover and 14 species of bluebells. At least 50 species of forest trees and shrubs have been recorded in the park boundaries.

In the fauna of the park are included 24 species of mammals, many of which are endangered: bears, wolves, deer, wild goats, wild boars, lynxes, martens. Also live 133 species of birds, including several raptors: eagles, vultures, hawks, and some fish species.
