#109 Bridge of Papastathis

The bridge of Papastathis was built in 1746 and cost 350 Venetian florins. It is located near the village of Anatoliki, in the settlement of Krapsi and it bridges Aracthos River. It served as a mean of communication of the residents of the villages of the Peristeri and Tzoumerka mountains with Ioannina in the past.

It is a historical relic for the area and it is a marvel of folk architecture. The bridge’s exquisite aesthetics battle with its solid construction for supremacy. The foreman, who was probably from Pramanta, put a lot of effort into it and managed to create a great work which withstood the hardships of both time and the bombardments of the German troops in 1942.

There are many versions that are told about the origin of its name and of the money used for its construction. Most likely true is the one that says it was built with money that was provided by a monk of the Monastery of Vyliza named Agapios.

The beauty of the bridge was praised by the poet Kostas Krystallis, who describes in one of his stories a route through the bridge of Papastathis. There was an inn near the bridge, for the travellers and muleteers.

It consists of four uneven arches that have between them three relieving openings. The big arch, through which water doesn’t pass now, has a length of 23.7m and a height of 8.7m.

The bridge of Papastathis was built in 1746 and cost 350 Venetian florins. Its deck is 2.7m wide and follows the line of the arches. Left and right there are destroyed parapets and vertical rocks. The bridge is solidly built. This can be observed when looking at the wonderful bracket that has a three-sided-ladder shape.

Chouliarades

It is built at an altitude of 1,050m on the slopes of Tzoumerka. It is well known for its craftsmen. However, the main occupation of the villages was stock breeding and agriculture. It’s also famous for its music. In particular, there are many events during summer in the village, the most notable of which are those during Easter and the three-day feast on September 7-8-9 in honor of Holy Mary. On the third day the traditional dances called kykles or kagkelari are carried out and on the third day the feast continues till sunrise.

The church of St Paraskevi, which was built in 1745 by craftsmen from Gkoura, adorns the central square of the village. Also, if you ever come to the village you should visit the stone built houses of Vourlokas, Giannikostas, Stamos, Karakostas, Tsirkas and Tsikos and the faucets of Diakos, Lemonia and Ragka, which are located on the central square.

The village is also of great historical interest, as 29 ancient silver coins were found in an excavated tomb by a resident in 1933. On the plain of Chouliarades a clay urn was found that was created between 600-500 BC (they are currently located in the archaeological museum of Ioannina).
