#105 Bridge of Karlimpou

It is an arched bridge that took its name from the stream that it bridges. It is located in Matsouki village, south of Kalarrytes village and it bridges the stream of Karlimpou. Its name is Wallach which means angle bracket. It is believed that this was name was given to it due to the continuous turns the stream has. Earlier there were “mantania” (=machines that use the power of water to weave clothes) and a stone watermill.

Dati storici, culturali e di interesse turistico

Matsouki

Unlike its neighbouring settlements, which were supported and flourished due to commerce and goldsmithing (Syrrako-Kalarrytes), Matsouki was mainly a farming village. The fact that no crafts were developed in this village isn’t due to its lack of traditional stone buildings and important sites, like the famous Monastery of Vyliza, which is situated between Matsouki and Kalarrytes.

The monastery of Vyliza is located at an altitude of 1050 on a wooded slope, above the place where the rivers Matsoukiotikos and Kalarrytikos meet. It is dedicated to the Annunciation. The priory is like a fortress and has battlements. Its church was built as a hall church with a narthex and a five sided apse.  There are murals, inside the church, that were made in 1797. Also, there was a remarkable library that had a significant number of manuscripts. There is a small single-nave church outside the monastery that is dedicated to John the Baptist. It has murals that were made in 1737 and a wonderful gilded iconostasis.

We can also visit, in Matsouki, the stone bridges in the places Stafylas, Favraina and Mantania, a traditional stone watermill near the village central square and the faucets of Parousos in Elaiodaso, of Kalouta near the village entrance and Fasoni near St Paraskevi.

The village is built at an altitude of 1,100m on the slopes of Tzoumerka Mountains.
