Construction characteristics

It is a double-arched bridge that is located in the community of Christi and bridges the Melissourgiotiko Stream. There are no data related to the date and cost of its construction, though we estimate that it was built during the first years of the liberation (1833-1890).

The arches and the other sides were made of schistose sandstone plates that are 22-30cm thick. The arches on the sides have a width of 75cm and are made of one-pieced neatly cut stone just like its intrados. The pier is 2.05m thick and is protected by semi-circular cantilevers that have semi-conic ends.

The deck is flat and is 48.65m long and is situated 5.75m above the water surface. It was widened by 53cm by reinforced concrete plates that were coated with asphalt.

Every arch has a height of 2.75m, a length of 13.02m, and a width of 3.00 and is part of a circle that has a radius of 9m.

Additional historical, cultural and touristic data

It is the place where the municipality of North Tzoumerka is seated. It is well-known for its craftsmen. The settlement is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Strogkoula (alt 2112m) at a height of 840m. It is 65km from Ioannina and is situated near the villages of Tsopela and Christi.

The village is well-known for its stone craftsmen. The mountainous and barren land made the residents of the area to get a skill that will be able to feed them. The development of commerce in the 18th century and the accumulation of wealth by traders from Tzoumerka helped the stone craftsmanship to boost due to the fact that many rich residents of Tzoumerka funded many constructions thus giving jobs to these famous craftsmen.

The latter formed working groups and travelled throughout Greece leaving indelible traces of their craft.

By getting data from relevant documents and testimonies, the Municipality of Pramanta has created a list that contains fifty projects done by craftsmen from Pramanta throughout Greece. Namely:

  • The famous bridge of Plaka in Aracthos
  • The belfry in Eleutherohori of Filippiada
  • Priories, churches, domes, and belfries in Epirus (Pramanta, Theodoriana, Gkrimpovo, Filippiada, Preveza) and in Amfilohia, Pente Pigadia, Amaliada, Kylini, Pertouli
  • The famous monument “Arapis” in Pramanta
  • Mansions, villas and the timber factory in Pertouli of Trikala
  • A school in Kalarrytes
  • A mansion in Zara of Arta

Great works of folk architecture are preserved in Pramanta, such as the houses of Vourlokas - Giannikostas - Stamos - Karakostas -Tsirkas – Tsikos, the threshing fields, the watermill with the “nerotrivi” (= a device that uses the power of water to better clean the clothes) and “mantania” (=a machine that uses the power of water to weave clothes) of Ad.Tsaktsiras and the mill at Christi.

You can find the historical faucet that bears the name “Arapis” on the village square; you can also find there the churches of St Paraskevi (16th century) and of Holy Mother (19th century). If you ever visit Pramanta you have to visit the monastery of St Paraskevi that is located outside the village and has a big church that has three aisles, four columns and an iconostasis with icons that date back to 1839.

Also, you have to visit the church of Asprokklisia in Markopoulos Forest and the bridges of Selio, Gkourantas, Christi and Smyris. There are ruins of ancient walls and rectangular turrets west of the village.

Nature lovers must not miss the opportunity to visit the Anemotrypa cave that is located about 5km from the village at an altitude of 900m. It has beautiful stalactites and stalagmites that have formed three ponds in the first chamber. It has a length of 350m, of which only a part that is 250m is used and is divided into three levels. On the second and third level we find the Chamber of the River, the Grand Staircase, they Grey Lake, the Waterfall, the Corridor of Wealth and the Chamber of the Red Lake.

Pramanta has many facilities for spending the night and getting some food. It also has many services such as a health centre, schools, library and different stores.

The area around Christi and Melissourgoi has tracks suitable for biking, so those who love riding a mountain bike have to take a look at them. Having Pramanta as a starting point, you can visit Kalarrytes that is at a distance of 17km and Matsouki which is 14km away.

Some of the landscapes that are worth visiting are the peak Strogkoula of Tzoumerka (2021m) and the fir forest that is located on the Prophet Elias hill (1100m) between the ravine of Aracthos and the mountains of Tzoumerka.

The mountain lodge of Pramanta is located at Isioma that is 7.6km from the priory of St Paraskevi (alt 1350). The lodge can accommodate 30 people and is the starting point of a route that leads to Strougkoula (alt 2112m) and lasts about three hours.

The village feast takes place on July 26. That is when the traditional dance that the locals call “trivito” is performed.
