#138 Bridge of Katevas

In the village of Kato Lavdani, in the shade of plane trees near the chapel of St. Nicholas is the bridge Kateva. The one-arched bridge is located at an altitude of 443 meters and constructed to achieve the crossing of the river Koutsovitiko, which passes to a nearby point of the village.

Construction characteristics

A small, elegant stone bridge joins the two river beds of river Koutsovitiko in the community of Kato Lavdani.

The arc, which completes the move in a semicircular path, has in the frieze a double row of stones (apsidolithon), which enhance the stability of the bridge and highlight the art of the masters.

The deck of the bridge is covered in Kalderimi (stone path), while there, in each side, is a low parapet.

The rest of the walls consist of slightly processed stone, as a whole, however, the bridge is a uniform structure.

Additional historical, cultural and touristic data

In the foothills of Mourganas, near the village Makralexi is one of the most historical monasteries of the Pogoni's region. The monastery dates from the 11th century, while a series of damage and destruction led to successive restoration work which shaped monastery in the form it is today.

The monastery played an important social role in its long history, allocating some of the revenue to support the residents.

Of particular value is also the inside of the monastery, which is full of valuable paintings. The illustration of the monastery, which was completed in 1902, took up the painters Nicholas and Michael from Linotopi, Kastoria. The rare pictorial work has been damaged because of time and poor maintenance in the past. Inside the monastery, there were historical religious artifacts such as relics, Gospels and icons, but they have been lost.
