Additional historical, cultural and touristic data

  Ancient Passarona

You can find the remains of the fortified ancient city on "Kastri" hill (alt 761m), in the area of Megalo Gardiki village of municipality of Zitsa. Also there are remains of an ancient temple north of the acropolis. The morphology of the wall is the same as other relevant findings of Epirus, a fact that doesn't assist us with determining the age of the acropolis.

The location where the remains of the ancient city were found is of great strategic importance, as it controls the Ioannina basin and the passage to the valley of Kalamas. The wall surrounds the flat surface of the conical hill (dim. 260 x 150m) and has a length of 800m. Its width ranges from 3.20m on its south side to 3.60 in the rest sides and the most preserved is its southern and eastern part.

During the process of building the wall, most used was the polygonal masonry system, with boulders that weren't equal in size but were all quadrilateral. The usage of irregularly cut stones is also used but not so often. The use of two different construction methods isn't because it was built in two phases but because of lack of materials.

The interior is filled with small and big unhewn boulders and reinforced with cross braces that have a distance of 2.50-5m between them and within the walls you can find buildings and fortifications of the Balkan Wars period (1912-1913). We have found in front of the north gate remains of a concave theater, with a diameter of about 50m and it is possible that a flea market and gymnasium existed inside the acropolis because of what an inscription located there indicates. The destruction of the acropolis is associated with the destruction of Epirus in 167 BC by the Roman army.

Experiential Museum of Folklore of Perdika

The Experiential Museum of Folklore of Perdika is a very interesting museum that would attract small children too, since it goes beyond the common standards. The village Perdika is easy to access and is only 21km from Ioannina. The visit to the museum can be combined with the visit to the War Museum of Emin Aga and after that a visit to the marvelous landscape, to its beautiful springs of the Louros River and the restored watermills. This is museum is actually an outdoor museum that presents the pastoral way of living and it consists of stone buildings that are the same with those of the pastoral settlement of the areas of Olitsika and Kserovounio.

The pastoral settlement consists of houses for the shepherds and buildings for the animals and is located near pasture areas. One of their special features is the autonomy they have when it comes to preparing food and clothing. The first house of the settlement is the shepherd's hut. That building is constructed in folk style. By observing it we can see the room where the shepherd with his family were sleeping and one that had all the equipment that he needed to manufacture milk -for their basic needs and the autonomy in their diet. When it comes to food you can see at the exterior of the house a traditional oven and the traditional pot called "gastra". The building's exterior is built with simple stone so that it will be easier to protect and keep the animals that the shepherds always had by their side.

The second building of the settlement is the property of the vine grower. We can find the machine that produces "tsipouro" (=traditional Greek drink) (the stills, the distillery), the winepress and the rest of the equipment inside the vine growers house. In addition to that we can get useful information about the vine grower and his vineyard. The third building has the features of a summer house and it houses the bread production workshop. Here we can see all the stages of the bread production, from the wheat to the insertion of the dough in the oven that is located in the building. Also there are photographs an explanatory text all other the house for a better experience.

The fourth building is the property of the quarrymen. Here we can find the tools that the quarrymen of Perdika used in 1950s, whose only occupation back then was the extraction of stone for the whole area but also for the city of Ioannina. You can also see on the outdoor seating the sheepfold that the shepherd milked the animals, the rooms where the grain was grinded to flour, the traditional well etc.

We can find tools, photographs and remnants of the WWI and WWII in the new site of the school, where the folklore section is hosted. There the kids are able to browse and read the reprinted newspapers from the WWII (1940-1943).
