#112 Paliouris Bridge

 


The bridge of Paliouri is located in the valley of Smolitsas near Paliouri village. This bridge is located in the valley's narrowest spot and has its foundation merged in the rocks there. It is estimated that it was constructed in 1835.

The village was located on a hill near the priory of Paliouri. It was one of the smallest villages in the Kouranton district. It got the name Paliouri in 1955 from the priory of Paliouri which was constructed in 1373 and dedicated to the Birth of Holy Mother.
 

Construction characteristics

 

  The arched stone bridge is in good condition, since it was recently repaired. It is one of the two remaining bridges that span Smolitsas River. This bridge is located in the valley's narrowest spot and has its foundation merged in the rocks there. The arc's length is estimated to be 9,50m and its height is around 6, 40m (5, 60+0, 80). The deck's length and width are 20m and 2,10m respectively. It is estimated that it was constructed in 1835.

  The priory of Paliouri

We can find the priory of Paliouri, which was dedicated to the Birth of Holy Mother, in the Local Community of Paliouri. The church of the priory is a basilica with three aisles with a dome. The roof consists of 12 equally sized smaller domes arranged in three parallel rows. The interior of the church is decorated with murals that date back to 1833, created by Theodosius and his son, Constantine, who were from Ioannina.
