#78 Bridge in Paraspori

Shortly before arriving to Chionades, you can spot the arched stone bridge located in Paraspori over the Sarantaporos River and the Pit of Alonitiko that according to a tradition was built in 1800 by craftsmen from Pyrsogianni. The money for its construction was provided by Dimitris Papaioannou and it cost 15 Ottoman liras.

The riverbed of the stream had already swamped the left area of the bridge by the 1910 decade. So, the old arch fell and it became a dry bridge. The new deeper river bed that was created was traversed from a wooden bridge that was created there. This wooden bridge was swept away by the stream in the 1950s. A new one was built to replace that one.

  Chionades

Chionades are located at an altitude of 1120m and 2km from Asimohori. Before you ascend to the village, visit the small restored stone bridge in Paraspori that was built around 1800 by craftsmen from Pyrsogianni. The village is built on the eastern edges of the Lesili peak, near the Albanian border, on a green slope. The residents of the village are few and mainly work as farmers. The area is known for its painters but also for its wonderful trails, canyons and rivers that cause admiration. On the village's picturesque square you can find the church of St Athanasius (1866), where you can find paintings of all periods of paintings of Chionades. The stone made school that hosts the village's traditional cafe and grocery is also an example of exquisite folk architecture. On the edge of the square, next to the faucet, there is an old stone building (1911) that will host the Museum Of Chionades Painters. Above the village, at an altitude of 1550m the priory of Prophet Elijah is located with an amazing view of the area. The Chionades Painters were known, for about two and a half centuries, across the Balkans for their wonderful religious and folk artwork that they making since the late post-Byzantine period and is hosted in several churches and homes. They were part of the few artists that worked on religious painting, iconography (portable icons, iconostasis paintings, murals) and the folk painting at the same time. There are at least 65 folk painters from Chionades that accomplished great things across the Balkans, as written by professor K. Moutsopoulos of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. On the 20th of July the residents of Chionades host a traditional feast and invite local musicians.
